Michael Zapruder
Michael Zapruder
Michael Zapruder’s unique, deep and varied songbook has provoked remarkable comparisons. From the Los Angeles Times come parallels to Kurt Weill and Elliott Smith; from Pitchfork, comparisons to Beck and Joni Mitchell. Amplifier Magazine has called his work “masterful,” Popmatters has called it “lovely,” and Performing Songwriter Magazine, in a review of Zapruder’s debut album, raved: “there’s just no way to overstate how good this record is.” Zapruder has always aimed for something distinctive, however, and so, while one of Zapruder’s shows may remind you, however briefly, of a number of different songwriters, the overall effect is singular. Whether he is performing on guitar or piano (in his solo shows, he splits his time between the two), Zapruder’s songs strike the listener as songs that only he could have made. A seasoned performer, having toured the US numerous times and making multiple showcase appearances at South by Southwest and Pop Montreal, among other festivals, Zapruder is personable and at ease on stage, his setlists moving fluidly from his strange yet poignant autobiographical songs, to his clever and sometimes funny scenario and love songs, and always arriving eventually at his powerful, contemplative, searching folk songs.
